Hi.

My X brought over this coin and it's puzzling me.

It's a 2014 Indian Head $50 dollar coin. It's a commemorative. The reverse side is the Buffalo. Under the chin of the Indian in very small raised letters it says copy. The edge has the reeding (I believe that's what it's called if its not smooth.) It weighs exactly one ounce. it is about 1.5 inches in diameter. There was no paperwork with the coin and I don't know where she got it.

What's puzzling me is it does say 1OZ .9999 Fine Gold on the buffalo side. All the pictures I've found of this type of replica say either 14 mil Fine Gold or they don't say anything.

Any ideas? What do I have here? I might try to upload an image if need be.

Thanks in advance.

Images would be great to help us be definitive in our answers.

That said, it sounds like you have a medal that is a copy of US gold "American Buffalo" coin. It's not uncommon for such copies to fully duplicate the design and inscriptions of the original.

The fact that it has "COPY" as part of the design is what I am using as the basis for my statement.

The core planchet is probably either bronze or copper-nickel. The gold is likely just a very thin plating.

The piece has very little value - the gold amount is so minimal it essentially adds no value.

BTW: The piece - even when real - is not considered a commemorative. It is a collector version of a US gold bullion coin.

Hope that helps!

I'm surprised they are still selling those fakes.

I haven't seen a commercial on TV for them in at least 2-3 years.

Then they go through the climb in investment value with a graph for the actual gold coin. They should be arrested.

Yup...that TV screen shot tells it all...privately minted copy that was selling a couple of years ago (different date on coin) for $9.95 plus shipping..it still pops up in ads each year

Good news is that does have gold on it....around 50 cents worth
