Hi everybody,

I am a beginning ancient coin collector and I would like nothing more than to learn to correctly attribute ancient and medieval coins. I found that I enjoy attributing more than actually owning and collecting coins, and to help out with that process Pishpash very kindly donated some worn coins that would give me a challenge.

To confirm whether I'm on track however, I would very much appreciate it if you could go over what I have attributed and see whether I made mistakes or whether additional information can be distilled. I'm also a real beginner with photographs and don't even own a camera - shots were taken with a mobile phone. Hopefully, you can still see some of the details of the coins.

Valens

And this one I'm most unsure about. I believe this one to be a Valentinianus I... or II. I think I is the best bet, but I'm not sure. GLORIARO MANORUM. Field right of labarum shows a B or possibly an R.

How did I do? Hopefully I did not get them all wrong. Regardless, the exercise is very fun and I'm looking forward to showing you my next batch if you guys don't mind. Additional question; do I need an expensive camera to make good shots of coins?

Edit: Made links out of the images as I did not realise there was a rule against posting more than two images.

I think you are doing pretty good! Can't say for sure because of the glare, they should really be photographed out of their wallets for clarity.

The last one strikes me as Valens - the legend seems to be quite spread. The letter in the field is an R.

The IDs were all correct.

Ben, could you tell me what you mean by a 'spread legend'? I have many of these gloriaro manorvm but the letters on the obverse are usually gone in most areas or otherwise unreadable. The 'spread of the legend' may be the only thing I have going for it to attributing these coins. Any quick pointers?

While typing this it occured to me that I read something about this a few months ago. I suppose what you say largely agrees with this text "Coins of Valens can often be identified with very few letters since his short name led to use of larger letters. If a coin has partial legends "VAL" but the longer name would not fit, chances are good it belonged to Valens. (Doug Smith)"
