When it comes to grading I am old fashioned. I hate the MS system especially when applied to foreign coins. I personally grade using the basics: F VF EF UNC and mention all defects. With that in mind I would ask how would other experienced collectors determine the value of a coin, for example a Bavarian 5 mark 1876 in EF that has been obviously cleaned or has a medium size rim dent. For pricing purposes would you lower it one grade or cut the price in half for that grade or...?

I've often wondered this myself. Personally, I either value them at a grade lower or the halfway-point between the original grade and the grade lower, based on how distracting/bad the problems are.

I qould cut thw price in half. NET grading is a practice I do not agree with as I'd rather have a lower grade problem-free coin over, say, harshly cleaned AU.

Thanks guys. Bob I really like your use or the word "distracting". On "NET" grading I agree with zxcccxz. Any grade not listing any defects (if any) is incomplete and misleading.

Doesn't that almost directly contradict your signature?
