With die break THAT obvious, I am just wondering it it IS indeed a die break, or remaining details of an understruck coin.

Curious and interesting. I will follow this thread for other comments.

Looks like they go underneath rather than through the design parts in relief. I would think gouges on the die, but those would be some pretty bad gouges.

I agree. Somehow the obverse Die became scratched or damaged.
