Several places I frequent watch for odd, old or different coins and notes for me. Some will save them others even will call me when they find something I might want. I always buy what they have even if it is of no real interest to me since I can just spend it elsewhere. I also reward them occasionally with a box of donuts, a Starbucks card or something when they find something real nice for me.

I have a couple bank tellers at a couple local banks (one gave me a Morgan a year or so ago!) that get stuff occasionally. At the local credit union they called me last month with a hoard of Ikes that were turned in, this was the third time they have saved a batch of these for me.

At the local grocery we shop in a couple times a week they all know me and wifey and save foreign and odd coins for me at the service desk. Last week I got a couple dollars worth of Canadian coins, a Spanish 5 Euro cent coin, a couple Taiwanese coins and an Australian.

My best source however is my local gas station/quicky mart. They all know me as the guy who greets them nicely, chats a bit, buys his lotto tickets and gallon of milk and treats them as the nice people they are instead of like most people who look at them as mindless dregs.

In the last few months they have come up with a dozen US silver coins, mostly quarters, along with a few dimes and a 67 JFK. A bunch of Canadian coins, including a few pre-68 silvers have popped up. They also found a $1 Silver Certificate and a few $2 bills, including a Series 1976. They even locked out the gas pump the other day on me since they were getting ready to lower the prices a few cents and wanted me to get the better price.

The moral of this diatribe is that if you ask they might have something interesting for you. If you make a point of treating them nicely on a regular basis they will save it for you. If you bring them a gift when they find something good they will remember you and go out of their way to look for stuff for you.

Be careful, though, and find out what they can and cannot accept for things like this. If you try to pass a gift card or something on to one of them, they could get in trouble. As a bank teller, I cannot personally accept a gift or favor in return for setting aside rare/valuable/collectable coins for someone (yeah, like I'd do that anyway ).

Now if you wanted to do a box of Krispy Kremes for the whole teller line...

You're lucky I'm not your teller. I keep all the good stuff for myself! :D

I would think most places would allow employees to accept a small token like donuts, bagels etc. not a large item. I think my bank had a $25 limit for a gift.

It's good advice, all around, but personally, I'd attempt to gift someone and find out that policy prohibits it. Last time into the bank, I passed out coupons for free 12 packs of ice tea to every teller working that day and both bank managers. I generally work with one particular teller and the bank managers, but they all chat with me (my kids) when we are in and good people all around. And there may come a time when I'll need services from one or the other.

More flies with honey than with vinegar. Be nice to them and they in turn will likely be nice back. Many have interesting stories to share, like anyone else, so if you make time and listen, the reward is yours.
