So I purchased a 10oz bar for my son on APMEX. Problem is, it came with a puncture in the packaging. Should I contact APMEX and see if they will exchange it, or is there some other recommended method to preserve/store bars. In case it helps, the item is one of these: http://www.apmex.com/product/65009/...f-the-dragon

Thanks!

It's pure silver so it will not really corrode, and if you keep it in a cool, dry environment it will not tarnish (tone) either. These bars are not worth more or less with or without their packaging they're just worth the spot price plus a dollar or two over spot so it won't really make a difference on pricing (Although a buyer may be more likely to buy one without a puncture in packaging that one with). How large is the puncture? Remember that if you do decide to return the bar you will have to pay return shipping which would cost you more than you would stand to gain from getting a bar in un-punctured packaging.

You could always keep it in the package it came in, place it AND a desiccant pack in a gallon zip-lock bag and it will be fine.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the response, I have it vacuumed in a zip lock temporarily. I chose this particular piece for the aesthetics, the puncture let air in the pack and it peeled away from the surface, so it has lost that nice visual appeal you get when the silver is tightly, and properly sealed. I suppose since I just want a nice looking piece for my son when he gets older, I'll give APMEX a call tomorrow. I'm not worried about the value or selling of this as it will be staying locked away for another 10 years or so. I would hope APMEX would cover the exchange since the fault is in their packaging, but maybe I am misguided about the level of customer service at businesses these days.

You could always try an Air-tite. Just check the dimensions in advance to ensure a proper fit.

Well, since it is a gift I could easily rationalize keeping it for myself and replacing it with one that arrived in more pristine packaging.
