I know lately the birds of canada series has been dying out, but when it was first released those coins are really expensive now. Any opinion on the last of the series if its worth making an effort to get a low COA or so. (will it atleast hold value or be like others available at like half of issue price)

There is the possibility that now that the series is coming to an end some collectors may be drawn to it since they know exactly what it is they need to have a complete set. There is something about a finite number of coins in a set that draws certain collectors to it. My guess is that this will have only a small impact on the number of new collectors for the series.

Personally, I don't think the final coin will ever appreciate significantly on the secondary market. I think the first few coins will continue to sell at a premium, while the others settle in around their issue price (or below).

A word about COAs: Since the numbered RCM COAs are inserted into the coin cases somewhat randomly and then the coins are pulled from inventory somewhat randomly, there's no guarantee that ordering a coin from the RCM the "moment" it is released will give you a low COA.

Correct, I just don't get this low COA premium.

That's fine, but do you remember, do you often get the "low COA" or somewhere from the half of mintage?

IMO, the low numbers just picked out by the employees with the access, and being sold to collectors that for some reason want to have them in the collection. Only this could explain, that they more "rare".

I agree that they are randomly selected but also I heard that the mint does not produce their entire mintage in 1 lot, so they make batches, and if you order early you would get into the first batch, lets say 0-1000, and overall get a lower mintage. I got lucky with the haunted Canada coin, got a fairly low mintage of 8, and I had it on preorder

Personally a low COA would only mean something if it was done in order... For example COA #1 was the first coin struck and the last COA was the last coin struck. Since that is not the case I don't understand the low COA premium (Or in the case of the last million pennies the replacement roll premium).

You don't have to understand why people want low COA's it's called collecting maybe they just like the low numbers that's all it's just like collecting anything, it's all personal preference what you collect and how you collect it.
