The project mentioned in a number of recent posts is finished and I'd like to share with you the results. Below is a statement of the scope of the set and a description of each coin, most of which were written by the seller, accompanied by a photo. Comment is earnestly invited.

Scope of the project: To acquire a bronze coin of each of the twelve Caesars featured in the so-named work by Suetonius. The coins can be of any denomination and from any mint, imperial or provincial. Each portrait should be reasonably identifiable without aid from the inscription. The name of the Caesar should be as complete and legible as practicality and budget allow. Variety will be a key characteristic of the set, with different sizes, colors and styles sought out in the acquisition phase.

I am not in the least surprised that you paid that much.
THAT is quite an accomplishment irrespective of the cost.

Being a 'known' cheapskate I did a quick appraisal in my head. Excluding the first coin I valued the Domitian on the low end ($20) and the "Vito" and Caligula significantly higher (around $200) and when all the coins were totaled up I had $500 remaining for the Octavian/Caesar AE.
That seems to me to be very reasonable all things considered. Caesar portraits generally bring the 'beeeeeg bucks'.
I think you did fairly well given the short time frame involved .
As stated previously I am still coming up short after 38 years !

I do think you should keep an eye out for an 'upgrade' on the Domitian. A few years back I managed to 'steal' a VF sestertius of Domitian for just over a hundred 'clams'. The deals are out there. Now that you have scored the goal you can relax a bit and try to "run up the score"

thanks for posting those TJ, that's a very nice collection. I think you caligula is my favorite of the bunch, with that sweet augustus bull reverse coming up a close second.
