when looking up a cert verification on the PCGS website, it also lists the price it sold at auction. does the price they give include a buyers fee?

Yes it does. Occasionally a mistake is made and the buyer's fee is miscalculated but it is supposed to be included and usually is accurate. The price does NOT include shipping/handling/insurance which can add $10 to $40 in some cases.

EDIT: Correct spelling & grammar.

Also sales tax could be added which would add an extra 8% or so. That's the main reason I can't buy anything from Heritage living in NY. Can't wait 'till we move to FL.

Good point edweather. If you pay sales tax + the shipping/handling you could be in it for +10% over above the posted auction result that already includes the buyer's fee.

We really need to watch the taxes/fees/premiums these days. They often go up without notice.

thank you for the comments! a lot to consider. it's good to know that the fees are included, but that may artificially inflate the price over time. and maybe everyone knows this and takes it into account. maybe not. so if I were to buy a coin at the ANA show in Chicago, I would have to pay Illinois sales tax also? how about stack's and bowers? I don't recall seeing anywhere in the terms and agreement about sales tax, just the 17.5% buyers fee. there's an internet session for ANA.

Illinois does not have sales tax on coins. Typically on auction sales you only pay sales tax if you live in a state the auction house has a business nexus in. In the case of Stacks Bowers that would probably be the states of New Hampshire, New York, and California. And the tax rate would be that of the state you live in. One other way you might have to pay sales taxes is if you accept delivery of the coins at the sale and the sale is in a state that has sales tax on coins. In that case the tax rate would be the local one.

Any auction result as listed should definitely include the hammer price and buyer's premium. What is not included is the shipping and sales tax. The shipping, which will always include some form of insurance, is generally based off the final price as it rises in certain increments. The sales tax only effects certain states. Let em tell you, CA is not nice. Rule of thumb....just add 10% onto whatever price you see. Also keep in mind that auction results will usually yield somewhat higher sales than ebay or what should be offered in a LCS. I've found, you can pay about 10% less on ebay than at heritage or stacks, but there is a large variance depending on what you're buying.
