For whatever your coin or coins of choice are, are you having less success in CRH than you did say 5 years ago? My son and I are finding this to be true in nickels, and nickels are less collected than some other coin denominations.

I've only been CRHing for a year, and my success rate at finding keepers are lower than when I first started. When I first started I could find any where between 20 - 40 wheat cents, per 2 boxes. Now, I only find 10 - 15 per 2 boxes.

Imagine how many people are dedicated to pulling out silver and copper and old stuff and varieties. Of course CRH will get worse over time, it's inevitable.

Said it many times before and I will say it again...I'm finding more now than I did 35 years ago.
Every time there's a run up in metals, 1980, 2011, etc, PM's are harder to find.
As time goes by, and prices drop, more collections and semi-precious metals get dumped.
Personally, my halves were seriously lousy the last five years.
Dimes OTOH, have been very consistent with my finds being 1 silver per $150 over last six years and $150,000+ searched.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

Cents have been pretty consistent over three years for me at least.

Pennies have been pretty consistent. Nickels and dimes as well. Halves are the ones that have declined the most for me. There are tons of people click clacking them in my area. I go to over10 different banks to get pennies and I ask about loose halves and they all say they can order bags or boxes and that they already have a few that order them weekly. With silver being priced so low it's easier to buy them at spot than getting skunked for 10+ boxes at a time. Just saying But it might be cyclical as well  Edited by Mr Click

Of course I am having less success which is both a happy thing and a sad thing.
Sad because I am filling less holes in folders.
Happy because thankfully I have a LOT less holes in folders TO fill.
The more you get that you need, the less you will find of what you need still, so the success rate of filling a hole is in proportion to the number of holes and the number of empty holes over time compounded by the number of the coin type in existence. (something like diminishing returns)

I'm kind of curious -- the majority of coin collectors are generally older.
Since many of these silver coins are being hoarded by a relatively small subset of the population, at some point I figure when they begin to die off, their hoards will most likely be redistributed back into general circulation (by heirs or whatever).
What will that do to the price of PMs?

What will that do to the price of PMs? Old collectors never die, they just smell that way! Like you said, such a small segment hoarding PM's, when they pass, their collections will have very little if any affect on PM prices. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

I believe a lot of CRHers still have this perception of 'cleaning out the vault'. That's generally not the case. It's more a function of people's interest and knowledge of silver coins. Of course this often revolves around the value of silver, as stated by FistfullaDirt. You can also see increases during high unemployment, holiday season, etc... The reason we find silver is because people who don't know or don't care are dumping them in circulation....currently.

Penny searching has really declined for me (after the Bank of Americas in my area decided to machine wrap their rolls). I was getting about 30-40 wheats a box, and now I'm down to about 11 or 12. I just started looking at dimes, have done two boxes, plus a couple rolls the teller had on hand, and I've had surprising luck. Six silver dimes, including a Mercury. Never thought I would be able to find that...

I've been doing CRH for six years now. Here is my stats about halves
year // silver coin per $500 (either box or CWRs)
2008 // 18.65
2009 // 6.04
2010 // 6.51
2011 // 3.47 (1-4 were good; 5-12 were dismal)
2012 // 1.68
2013 // 2.23
2014 to date // 2.13
In April of 2011 the silver price reached $48. In May of 2011 my finding rate dropped significantly. I did lots of successful road trips before 2011 but only two trips after 2012 and both were bust.
I wish that I was introduced CRH in 2005.
