Hello guys,

After some weeks of absence I finally bought a new coin I already wanted for some time.
Its a prutah of Pontius Pilate, so its a good addition to my collection which already contains a prutah of Herod and a Judaean revolt coin.

Prutah-Of-Pontius-Pilate

JUDAEA, Procurators. Pontius Pilate. 26-36 CE. Æ Prutah (15mm/1.7gr). Dated RY 18 (31 CE). TIBЄPIOY [KAICAP]OC, lituus / LIH (date) within wreath. Meshorer 334; Hendin 650. VF, a few minor deposits and rough spots, patina slightly chipped on obverse.

The relationship between the Romans and the Jews during the administration of Pontius Pilate became increasingly more volatile than during previous administrations, as Pilate took many steps to incite and provoke the Jews. Ensigns which bore the image of Tiberius were seen as a denigration of their religion. Uprisings ultimately ending in executions and Messianic hope became increasingly more common. Of numismatic significance, religious sentiments were further antagonized through some of Pilate's early coinage which featured the simpulum and lituus, elements of the pagan Roman religion (see Avi-Yonah, The World History of the Jewish People, vol. VII, pp. 128-30).

Unusual to read the name of Tiberius so clearly.
As to the year indicated ...... Well that is just about 'spot on' isn't it !
I never was tempted too much by these types . But this one surely would have given me reason to pause and think.
Nice acquisition.
Now don't drop it on the carpet !

Thanks all! Indeed Furius, the name and year can be clearly written. A lot of other Pontius coins are heavily tooled, this one is in a good state.

Nice coin dutch.

Here is my Pilate, purchased from vcoins a couple of years ago, it dates from a year before the crucifixion.

Three grains and simpulum.

I didn't know that Pontius flew aeroplanes.
Ya learn sumthin' new every day!

DG: That piece is a rather pleasing above average example, both in die cutting and condition.

I recently saw a coin claiming to be the same year as the crucifixion. I did a bit of googling and it seems that nobody actually knows the date. What evidence is there that LIZ is the date?

Pish,
I dont think there is a lot of evidence, there are some people who would debate whether Jesus existed at all. I only really say a year before the crucifixion because thats how the coin was sold to me. From what I can tell most people seem to think it was actually 33AD. Personally I just like the fact that it's a coin of Pontius Pilate and assuming the basic facts about Jesus are true would have circulated during his time and in the place he lived.

Yes, I like yours also Pish. There are a couple more biblical types I am on the lookout for. Herod the Great, Herod Antipas etc. Also quite fancy a Heraclius pilgrim token, Echizento posted one a while back, supposedly containing fragments of the true cross. Have not come across any for sale though sadly.

I agree Jimo and pish, same reason here why I wanted this coin for quite a time already. I'm very interested in these historical important coins. Maybe we should start a topic(smackdown?) where everybody can show their (possible) biblical related coins?
