Friends can you tell me, the signature is far from rim from 1951 to 1954 and near rim from 1954 to 2001?

I've just looked at the ones in my collection - the signature is further from the rim on the 1951 - 1954 coins and closer to the rim on the coins from 1955 onwards - the most recent date I have is 1987. I'd never noticed this before.
