When you input the numbers in their verification system it pulls info up along with a price. What does that price mean? Is that a reasonable guide to go off of to pay for that coin? Seems a little high IMO.

The price on the PCGS verification is from the PCGS price guide.

It's just a guide but with patience you can find lower prices than those suggested by PCGS and NGC.

I use it to get a relative idea of where things are at, but in reality you should subtract a few bucks to get a better idea.

PCGS price guide is high end retail for PCGS graded (or equivalent) coins. It is similar in many cases to Coin World values, in other words very high. Auction archives are your best bet with ha.com and ebay being at the top of the list for prices paid (current value).

Two things...

/1/ It FULLY reflects the "PCGS Premium" (if you believe such animal exists)
/2/ It is FULL RETAIL - think soft music, comfy chairs, indirect lighting, sales people who call you sir or madam and offer espresso to their customers

Then there is retail - guy named Moe with an unlit cigar, two days of beard stubble in a little home in the wall shop in North Jersey. But at least his bowling shirt is clean.

Then there are the still lower dealer-to-dealer prices (grey sheet)

And then there is 'fell off the truck' pricing (counterfeit on ebay)
