Lovely big medal 85 x 55 mm, possibly from a music festival; but no location given. I'm guessing that this is from Belgium because of the ribbon colours. The E abbreviation after XXXVI makes me think it's from the Walloon French speaking part. (trente-sixième) The supporters on the coat of arms are a merman and mermaid above crossed oars. So as Wallonia doesn't have a coastline, I'm looking for a city or town on the river Meuse, but can't find a match for the CoA. Any suggestions welcomed. The pawnbroker's symbol at the bottom could be a link to the Medici's or Lombards in general. OK, so I'm clutching at straws.

The ribbon is black, gold & red, poor lighting. Apologies. Fisch & Co. The & Co, makes me think of an issuing company rather than a medalist, although there were Belgian designers of that name.

This is the coat of arms of the Belgian city of Ostend (Oostende, West-Flanders).
The legend XXXVI e FESTIVAL could as well be interpreted as French or Dutch.

Merci Messieurs/Dank you heren
So, the bottom is a stylised anchor and nothing to do with Italy. My next problem is finding out which festival. I've tried checking 1893 for mentions of a first festival, but of course the chances are that festivities ceased 1914-1918. Good fun.

There was a known music festival in Ostend which ceased from 1915 to 1920: the Bestendig Festival Permanent (Permanent Festival in Dutch and French). There is a good chance it is about this festival: it started in 1889 and was held until 1914. Then it had a restart in 1921 so, if I can count well, in 1929 the 36th festival must have been held. The festival was stopped in 1939. I found information about this festival thanks to this webpage about another medal (the webpage is in Dutch): http://www.museuminzicht.be/public/...d=stamN.1916

On the same site you can find your medal: http://www.museuminzicht.be/public/...d=stamN.1901google translate : description: Coat of Oostende is on the front, surmounted by a crown, held by a wild man (left) and a wild woman beneath a bundle of palm leaves and two oars all held together by a ship's bow and top round, XXXVI E FESTIVAL and under the bow 19, 29; around the bottom of a curved trim and everything is on top of a vertical band which turn bars are shown. On the downside on a high pedestal winch surmounted by a shining star, and the right is a woman with long robe to the left and puts her left hand a laurel wreath on the winch while her right hand a palm branch holds: the left is an angel in front view looking at the winch, she blows a trumpet and a laurel wreath in her right hand and the bottom of the cut-off, FISCH & CO and the same finish as on the front.
In 1889, the first festival in Ostend decorated. The performances went through the kiosk on the weapon square. Due to the success of the first year, especially among the tourists, the city council decided to keep. A music festival every year during the summer season The performances were expanded next Wapenplein to place kiosks throughout the city. By the First World War, the festivals were interrupted from 1915, were resumed in 1920 until 1939 After World War II there was no regularity in the organization and festivals were held only occasionally. The participants of the festival were, as was the custom, a commemorative medal.

This is the beauty of CCF. OK, sometimes you end up knowing no more than when you started, but other times like this; you get the whole package wrapped up with (black, gold & red) ribbon.
Thanks for tying it up so well Petrus & Bart
