Hi all! New to the forum. I have a question about this Peace dollar. I recently bought it from APMEX just for the heck of it. Upon closer inspection I noticed hairlines all over the obverse of the coin. How much does this affect the value of the coin or any coin for that matter?

To answer the question, the hairlines indicate that the coin has been cleaned, and it reduces the value significantly. It's hard to say the exact value, because cleaned coins are considered damaged. At that point it's only worth what someone will pay for it.

Thanks for the welcome ASEnut. Wheatchaser140 the surfaces of the coin are brilliant. Can it still be considered cleaned even with brilliant surfaces?

If your coin have hairlines it is considered cleaned no matter it is still brilliant.

Thanks all. I guess if I decide to buy another coin from APMEX I'll make sure it is one that is slabbed.

I would request to return it for that reason.

Quote: Can it still be considered cleaned even with brilliant surfaces? Yes it can, but only if the coin is lightly cleaned. If you have a coin that has been polished to heck and back there will be no luster, and that coin will be worth less than a lightly cleaned coin with brilliant surfaces.

just to step back a moment...and seeing as the OP is a new member....could the "hairlines" being talked about be the cartwheel we see on top grade coins? To the untrained those could look like scratches

Yeah, the pictures are way too small for me to tell. Hairlines can also just be natural wear, not necessarily cleaning. I guess what state of coin were you promised from APMEX? They have several tiers of coins they sell. If it was from the VG-XF tier, then I'd say some scratches are expected.

Welcome. APMEX will stand behind what they sell. If you don't like the coin or have concerns I would contact them right away. They sell very good products and I have had a lot of luck with them. Their customer service is great. Do not remove it from the 2x2 that it came in. If you bought it as uncleaned BU it should be that or return it.

Thanks all for the responses. I am experienced enough to know what a cartwheel is and the coin has cartwheels just like any other uncirculated coin. The coin was shipped inside of a plastic flip. I think that the employee who put the coin in the flip may have been unknowing on how to do so properly and as a result hairlines were caused.
