Hello,

I came across this old coin and wonder if any of you fine gentlemen would know anything about it?

Hi, welcome to the forum. It looks rather like Philip the Arab, can you give us the size in mm and the weight in grams?

Wow that was quick!

Yeah could possibly read PHILIP around the edge.
The coin is around 25mm diameter.

No means to weigh it unfortunately. The side is quite flat though and pretty thick if that helps.

Philip I (The Arab) was around 244-249 AD.
If you go to wildwinds.com, you can search through the coins of Philip I. The coin might be an As (Assarion) have a look and see if you can come up with something similar to yours.

Unfortunately the edge shot looks like it has been filed or 'rasped'. It is likely a modern (low grade) casting although it might possibly be genuine.
But I don't think so.
By the thickness it is almost certainly supposed to be a sestertius. The diameter is indicative of an 'as' but as castings usually shrink around 10% from the original size this would account for the discrepancy.

I agree with FR, the overall appearance of the porous flan and soft strike along with filed edge would lead me to believe that this is a cast copy.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your help on this, pretty amazed actually.
Yeah I kinda thought as much as this coin was with a bunch of other coins marked WRL I was just hoping there might have been a real old coin amongst them.

Well I shall keep my eye out for more incase something genuine turns up. Thanks again.

As everyone is no doubt aware, a coin with "WRL" stamped into it is a Westair Reproductions Limited replica.

And I'm wondering whether this one might be as well; I can see three dark spots or holes that look suspiciously like an upside-down "WRL" underneath the seated figure.

Westair coins usually look better than this; I'm wondering whether it as been either accidentally or deliberately "aged" to try to hide its replica-ness.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
