1863 One Penny Die Number - Coin Community Forum

I was searching through some old coins I've collected over the years, this one was found in my own garden a good few years ago metal detecting. After doing a bit of research into the coin I noticed many didn't have a marking under the date, a closer look it seems to be the number 4? I researched abit and found this article which seems very similar to my penny apart from the number being different. I remember reading an article about these die number pennies in 'Coin Monthly' years ago - that magazine has long since ceased publication and all my copies are in cardboard boxes in my loft, so I can't easily get to it. loose54 Valued Member United Kingdom 51 Posts	Posted 08/26/2014 12:28 pm A nice coin! A while back I was collecting the penny series and had a die number 3. They are scarce coins. I would say the coin is in only fair condition. The main issue would be checking that it has not got any corrosion that is going to damage the coin in the long run and that it is stable. I am actually getting back into the Victorian penny series so if you want to sell it let me know! Report this Post to the Staff
