What is acceptable as a cleaning method without damaging or harming coin values? I want to insure no oils, etc. before I put them in snap containers. What are signs you look for in determining whether a coin has been treated or altered by chemicals? Thanks, RWA

Acetone will not harm the coin in any way while removing grime. Put "acetone" in the CCF search engine, there are several threads with further instructions.

There are several signs that indicate a coin has been improperly cleaned (i.e. using something besides acetone). Excessive hairlines, a washed-out "off" color, a circulated coin that is abnormally shiny, etc.

When using acetone make sure it is pure acetone and not nail polish remover. Also before using do a search here on CCF as to how to safely use it.
