It would be nice to see one of these sort of ventures take off, but they've been trying them for a long time and I'm unaware of any with any real success. The biggest problem is, as many "buy local" locations and people you get, they never get the box stores and without that, it never works. It turns into an inconvenience for merchants and consumers both. They do still make a nice piece of history though.

I collect Canadian souvenir tokens (Maritime focus) so I kind of not really collect this type of thing. It is neat to see what the people from that region deem important enough to put on their currency and not what the federal government pumps out.

I know for the "box stores" in Woodstock, NB, back when our dollar was put into circulation, they would take them and exchange them later at Woodstock Chamber of Commerce.

Also how many notes will stay in Colorado? I could see them being taken back to wherever as a souvenir or people living on the Colorado border being fed up with their non-national status.

If the end up in a bargain bin some day in the future I might pick one up but I won't go looking for any.

I'd love to get an assortment of bills but I'm afraid the long term value for collecting would be limited. They do look interesting.

This came to mind when I saw those:

Anyone-Collecting-Co-Jacks?

"Gee let me trade this money I can spend anywhere (including Colorado) for the same amount of money I can only spend a few places"

Although with all the Disney fans in the world, those Disney dollars are actually quite collectible.

My Israeli relatives used to have quite an assortment of store credit bills from various local chains. That was about a dozen years ago admittedly - not sure if they still have any.
What I mean is, I would much more gladly make a collection of various store credit than any such local currency (and believe me, Colorado's version is far from the first).
Heck, I already have a $20 bill flyer from Mavrodi's second MMM campaign, supposedly to be exchanged for $20 on an account in MMM under some specific rules I don't remember precisely. (I also have some bills from the original MMM, but these were common enough - and, at the time, valuable enough - that for all I know they actually circulated as money.)

It slightly helps for me personally that I don't have much interest in paper money (as opposed to coins), and other than the occasional micronational issue (too expensive for me), pretty much all such local currency entirely consists of paper money.

Yes there will be people that collect them, there is an entire group of people that collect these local currencies (The article tile is misleading, this isn't a currency for Colorado, just for a local community in CO.) There have been a lot of communities that have issued local currencies. Not just here but around the world.

There are many communities across the country that do quite similar things in order to develop a community business base or to strengthen it in times of economic downturns. It could also be a reaction to a local mistrust of a national fiscal policy.

Conder is right about the title of the article be misleading. It just a local thing like other local actions in many states around the country. I'm quite sure that it we took the time to really look into it we know just how far things like this reach.

All in a effort to either strengthen or grow local economies in areas where local businesses are in trouble and need to remind residents to buy local. Quite similar to the buy American feelings that swept the country awhile ago and has fallen out of the public eye.

I personally like the idea no matter what community is being pushed.
