The purpose of today's visit to the local coin show was to obtain a 5th-early 4th century Greek stater or tetradrachm. Have a look at what I chose:

Acquisition:-Aspendos-Pamphylia-Stater
Acquisition:-Aspendos-Pamphylia-Stater

Pamphylia, Aspendos
420-370 BC. AR Stater 10.62 g
Wrestlers / Slinger
SNGF.65v, aXF

What caught my attention is the crispness of the inscription featuring the Pamphylian form of the name of Aspendos: Estvediys. The triskeles piqued my interest in symbology.

As I'm treading new ground with this coin, pinning down the attribution has been challenging as I can't find another example that has the Phi in the reverse field and the particular pair of letters beneath the wrestlers. I'm sure the members of the this forum could swiftly shed some light on that question.

Finally, I'd like to know how I did on the price. The dealer, with whom I've done business before, let this coin go for $470, down from his asking price of $525.

Thanks for reading!

I have one of these and not nearly as nice. For someone looking to collect ancient coins this one is a must have. Can't go wrong with commemorating the Olympic of old. I love the wrestlers. Look these guys are fighting for wrist control. Wonderful piece. Decent price. Excellent coin and well worth it.

that sure is a pretty coin, but I'm only vaguely familiar with the type. the price seems reasonable I would guess. I wouldn't be brave enough to buy it without knowing lots about these coins.

Oh, I always love coins with the trisekeles on them. The coin seems fairly high grade, with one side being struck by a rusted/worn die (That's my guess).

I've seen them sell inthe $350 range vut those were lower grade examples, yet a worn die would reduce value. It's a bit hard to say but I'd say you did OK.

Much nicer than other coins of the type I've seen at that price. I'd love to add one to my collection!
