Consider Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836 3rd Edition by Al C. Overton. I don't know what they go for these days, but it is an excellent reference source.

You can find them on ebay pretty easily for $70-80. Not sure if that's the cheapest source, but there are always several sellers selling them.
