I am looking for a 7th Century BC 'filler'.
Before I spend my money,
Is this coin from that period, and if so can anyone tell me anything more about it, please?

Hmm... I too am currently looking for a 5th-7th century coin for my collection.

The Punch marks are indicative that this coin is of a primitive striking natire (So it indeed could be 7th century). The obverse picture looks to be an upside-down lion's head facing right although without the weight and diameter I can't help you identify the time. Ionia struck coins with a lions head in the 6th Century BC, I don't know what yours belongs. Any information given from the seller?

I'm not sure what this is, other than archaic, but it is 6th century BC at the oldest. If you want 7th century BC you'll need to hunt for some Lydian electrum.

From Lydia, circa 650 BC, there are striated electrum pieces of standardized weight. Although what constitutes the "first true coin" is arguable, most numismatists seem to consider the subsequent Lydian lion electrums the first "true" coins.

The Lydian lions were initially struck in the weight range considered a trite (1/3 of a stater). Various references the strike date ranges from ~630 to ~546 BC and there is a less common subtype which is noted to be the earliest (the "nose wart" is shaped like a cross), struck ~630-620 BC. The most common type of Lydian lion (rounded "nose wart" with more rays) is generally cited as being struck later, probably early to mid 6th century BC. These earliest Lydian lions were struck under kings Sadyattes and Alyattes.

Shortly after the Lydian lions emerged, other electrum coins were minted with a variety of iconography.

Edited to add: the "nose wart" is a sun.

It have seen written that the earliest of Chinese currencies may date from around 650 BC.

TIF - In light of the above quote, would this qualify as 7th Century B.C.? (700 - 601BC) only four rays

@Topcat... No, the 4-rayed sun bit applied specifically to the electrum lion trites from Lydia. The coin in your last post is from Kyzikos in Mysia. It is a silver fractional denomination, minted from the 5th century to early 6th century.

Topcat, You'll need to get an early Lydian coin then. There may be some eastern coins or protocoins from 7th century too.

Here are some 7th century BC coins for sale or coming up at auction (not all in the coins shown are that old, you'll have to look at each one)

Aaaargh!!

TIF. I checked the three sites that you referred me to (thank-you) and after I wiped up the 'drool' I checked the 'coffers' and found them somewhat 'wanting'. (Starting price for one auction GBP60,000!)

I did find a couple of listings that, if I was the only bidder, sounded as though they could be quite reasonable. I will have to 'register' first.

Thanks, again.
