Have this odd token, was wondering if anyone knew some additional history behind it, appears to be a token promoting a magician?

It is from the 1890's and is made of German Silver. I will start digging to see if I can find the mintage number and maker of this medal. I will also see who this magician was.

This is not my listing, I don't know who this guy is, I have no stake in the sale. Here is a book that might be of interest.

Some of the magic that did coin tricks, instead of using fifty cent pieces, dollars etc. used coins made for the tricks. Cheaper and they could have them to advertise their act.
They also could be sold as souvenirs of used in the act at the theaters. If they had people up on stage, they might give one to their "assistant" also as a souvenir.

The reverse say "For the Art of Magic" above and "Not yield". google translation of Latin.
Might be referring to for the art and not profit.

C. Milton Chase - Boston's most famous magic store, C. Milton Chase, established in 1851. A 1890 Chase token (MT063). Token is German silver, R-7 in rarity, with bullseye on eagle on obverse side

Here is a listing from a mail list auction C Milton Chase, 1890. MT063; Rulau MA-Bos-8. Mechanician; rev eagle. GS, scarce R7. XF, mottled toning. $75.00-100.00+
I have no idea if it sold and for what price.
Hope this helps you.

Sometimes, tokens and coins were given as prizes by performers to audience members. I seem to recall having once read that some of these tokens were purposely drilled so that the eagle would less resemble that on coins of the era.

Paul

Glad you joined the CCF and could share some information on this token.

While I am not an avid token collector, I do have a few sales tax tokens in my collection.

Hope you will continue to share your knowledge with the forum.

I'm here looking for persons who might have an interest in Magician related tokens as I do.. So that we can share information, possibly trade, buy, sell amongst ourselves. I created the Magic Token Society website for that purpose. Hopefully I can meet a few fellow collectors on here and share information. I will be adding more information to the website as I get time to work on it. It's my hobby and pleasure, not my employment...LOL
