What do you think about the idea in this article? Is the Star Rare Coin Encyclopedia responsible for someone writing "worthless" across this recently auctioned note?

Was "worthless" written in modern times or when the bank collapsed? It I possible someone saw the article In the encyclopedia and thought that the obsolete bank notes had no numismatic value and wrote worthless across it. Also he may have wrote worthless across it to give it a cool back story to boost sales. Yet again it could be a genuine bill that someone wrote "worthless" on back in the day

I would like to see the original bill, surely penmanship and ink type could tell us for (almost) certain.

Probably a bank official just stating no current value as at that time . Most likely contemporary.

Seems to me the author of the article believes "worthless" in the encyclopedia refers to the collectible value of the notes. "Worthless" in this case means non-redeemable, an important consideration if the catalogue dates of an era when the collectible value of such "wothless" notes was less than face value.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I guess what I'm wondering is, since the Star Coin Encyclopedia was essentially an advertising toold aimed at the general public (and a very effective one at that), isn't it possible the public may interpret the term "worthless" as pertaining to collector value as well as the non-redeemable factor? The date of the catalogue this photo was taken was 1947.

Oh of course, the catalogue should have said something along the lines of "These non-redeemable, obsolete bills are worthless at face value but hold a numismatic premium" or something like that. If a non-coin person found a stash of those bills and then that book I could see him scribbling "worthless" across them thinking they were literally not worth the paper they were printed on.
