Nic-A-Date Buffalo Nickel Values? - Coin Community Forum

Someone offered to sell me some Nic-a-date Buffalo nickels. He quoted the PCGS's price guide for a G-4 reference price. 1916-D $16 S $15 1917-D $22 S $27 1918-D $23 S $16 1919-D $16 S $12 He offered to sell them to me for $4 each. I don't know enough to tell if this is good or not. Are these fair prices? Or too much to pay for Nic-a-dates? Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 08/22/2007 12:05 pm I would say $4 each isn't too bad of a deal as long as the only issue is the nic-a-date. Can you see them before purchase? The PCGS prices are on the high side but using the Heritage Numismedia value guide, the avg G4 price range for all is $82-112 and VG8 is $138-187. I have seen quite a few dateless Buffs that are closer to VG-8 overall details than G-4. I would never recommend purchasing Philly Buffs that have been nic-a-dated since they are inexpensive and common in an undamaged form. Mintmarked Buffs that have been nic-a-dated can be an inexpensive option for filling expensive early holes. Report this Post to the Staff
paland New Member United States 34 Posts	Posted 08/22/2007 12:38 pm As I said in the other thread, look at how well the coin was done. Some look absolutely terrible while others are well done. I think the timing of how long they leave the acid on makes a big difference. Although the date is quite clear on many of these and there is barely a stain on others, you can tell that it has been restored because the date is thinner. Report this Post to the Staff

I have seen coins that only the date was done and the stain is minimal so that the coin still has some nice eye appeal. In that case, I would say the price of $4 is very fair. On the other hand, I've seen coins that the entire coin was immersed and they look absolutely terrible. I have seen ones in between where the date and some of the details (usually the horn) has also been done. I would stay away from these also unless you can get them for around $1. The ones that were completely dipped went in the trash. Glad to get some feedback on the price, I had no idea either! Oh, and I live up in West Palm in case you are ever up this way.
