Bought this @ Long Beach show yesterday. Asked dealer whether it was cleaned or not. But dealer said it wasn't. Need opinions on the grade and whether it looks like cleaned or not. Sorry for the pic quality. I used my phone to take the picture. Edited by Peacesilver 09/07/2014 5:20 pm

Looks ok, pics are a little small, appears to be some luster creeping through.. Very tough coin, looks EF+
Looks like a minor rim bump on obv 4:00

I sharpened the obverse pic a bit. Not sure if it helps. I'll take a stab at XF45.

Based on the pictures I am leaning towards cleaned. It appears to have AU details.

It's disappointing that this coin is looking like cleaned. If the coin was really cleaned and dealer lied about it, that's really bad. Should I send it in to TPG for their opinion ?

XF/AU details, although it is difficult to conclusively grade coins using just photos I'm leaning towards this coin being cleaned. Not much luster showing/surfaces look kind of hazy in spots. Not worth sending to a TPG in my opinion.

Dang, you guys are too much - NoD, you take time to enhance the picture...... Hopefully, you will have time to take a look at the ones I posted today. I also hope after reading these every day, I will be able to eventually add my opinion.

I just got better equipment to take the picture so here are more close ups: Also, I weighed the coin this time on the weight scale and it weighs 26.65 grain which falls short of 26.73 grain for Peace Silver dollar. Is this variance ok or is this fake coin ?

Sorry, but I have to agree with the others. Too many fine lines for it to not be cleaned.

Quote: Is this variance ok or is this fake coin ? Details seem right, weight I think is within tolerances. Your coin looks genuine. Possibly the wear and cleaning accounts for that missing weight. What does everyone else think?

To assist in the assessment of a fake or not, try a comparative ring tone test with another known genuine Peace dollar. I agree with previously mentioned gradings. I say 'cleaned', because I can't see any evidence of mint lustre. With most of the other guys going for EF/AU, there should be some evidence of residual mint lustre at these grades, with an uncleaned coin. I have to humbly admit that I have trouble in the grading of Peace dollars; there seems to be a wide variation in the quality of strike. Determining the amount of wear from pictures for me is difficult with a softly struck Peace dollar.
