Its not that the Government is specifically melting US Cents, its that all pennies that are collected by the banks and sent back to the mint, are to be melted down. I do not think they have hired someone on the back end to sort through and make sure they are only melting Canadian coins, therefore the coin I just found in a roll I just got, would have gone back and been melted.

WOW! Amazing find...I've never found a VDB and I search a lot. What's even more amazing is it's around an EF40/45 coin!

Quote: Why is Canada melting U.S.A. cents? Is that legal? Yes, melting cents is only illegal in the US.

It likely isn't a lucrative venture, given that the government is doing it. Although on the scale of 4 billion cents they may manage to turn a profit.

It goes both way. Canada will find our key dates while we find theirs. Its because of the knowledge of their own better dates. I bet alot of canadians would find a 1909-s vdb and and throw it back as just another american penny as many americans do for CAN coins. I found a 1949 1c A to denticle recently while hunting US Cents.

THE SECOND COMMENT ON THIS THREAD... Unbelievable, and you know what, there's probably more that didn't even make it like a 1925 or BU IHC. anyway nice find and thank you for saving it

Thanks, its actually interesting, since the demise of the penny here in Canada, I have been searching more rolls of pennies than before (2012) and what I am finding is odd. 1) I am finding way more BU coins from the 60's all the way up through the 80's (sometimes a whole roll of a certain date) 2) WAY MORE USA cents, again full rolls. the second is actually a blessing, because I am actually finding way more Wheaties than before. I worked through a box the other day (Yes I can still get full boxes) and I found about 30, including 2 steelies. I have actually found 3 IHC none of which were BU unfortunately, the last one I don't know the date because its waiting for a bath in some acetone, its caked with something.
