OK, I am sorry for hogging the Forums this afternoon. I have been doing some hunting while at work (don't tell anyone) shhhh!! Anyway, I just cracked open a penny roll (remember I'm from Canada) And low and behold I found another wheetie (I have found 4 today in about 70 rolls so far). I turned this guy over to see the date, noticing some smudge near the rim between the wheat stalks. AND IT's a 1909(no mm), I flip it back over and ah huh, its a VDB. That's right up here in the Great White North. What do you think this would grade as?

That is really cool! Do you collect Lincoln Cents? If not, this would be a great start!

I started this whole thing hoarding copper cents, both USA and Canadian, then I started researching and finding some errors, and some varieties (mostly Canadian) I have a good pile of wheats. if I was to start a collection, it would only be the Wheaties (I do own FE's as well as some IHC's)

Nice find! For sure the coin roll hunting community here is only searching/finding a small portion of what gets turned in, but we do what we can. Based on what I have found so far I have to assume that a 1909 s VDB has probably been melted down (at least one but maybe a few based on volume). There may just be one out there, in a jar, or a roll. Just waiting for an uninformed owner to bring it to the bank... I did some math and there were 25,745,247,389 wheat pennies minted (only about 10 billion less than total Canadian small cent mintage). Which means the 1909 S VDB represents only 0.00188% of Wheat cent mintage or 0.00010125% of total Lincoln Cent mintage (not counting 2014). So if the Alloy Recovery Program has melted down 4,000,000,000 pennies (Toronto Sun article July 15,2014) and lets say a conservative 10% of them were US pennies = 400,000,000 (I get a ton of US cents CRH'ing) Take that number and multiply it by 0.0000010125 = 405 1909 S VDB pennies melted down for copper bullion. I don't believe that many have been destroyed but maybe 1/100 that made their way to Canada were negligently discarded leaving us with 4. I'll go with that because it sounds somewhat plausible. Which leaves a completely hypothetical population of 2 1909 S VDB's somewhere out in the wilds of Canada. Unknown and ready to be discovered...or melted.

Very nice find indeed. Question: Why is Canada melting U.S.A. cents? Is that legal? John1
