I was researching an 1860O SL 50c in XF and looked at NGC price guide

http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplo...CoinID=16300

I knew the price guides were not always accurate, but WOW.

XF40 190
XF45 190
AU50 265

But then I look at the auction prices... these are all relatively current (May, June 2014)

PCGS XF40 558.13
PCGS XF40 195
NGC XF Detail 150.40
PCGS XF45 211.50
PCGS XF45 182.13
NGC XF45 499.38
NGC XF45 470

The coins aren't attributed as any specific special variety

Anyone have a clue?

I know the price guides can be way off for low demand coins, and can also be off in the other direction for high demand coins.

In this case it looks like they are closer in line than the actual sales which appear to be crazy high in some cases, or close to reality in others. Besides the 3 that sold way high, the other 4 (not counting the 'details' one) seem to be right in there as far as the price guide. Am I missing something? XF are "priced" at $190, and they 'sold' for about that, right?

You also have to consider what the coins that were auctioned looked like. Were they accurately graded? How was the eye appeal? And of course there is also the possibility of inexperienced bidders with auction fever.

Are those outliers ebay auctions? Heritage results indicate a PCGS XF45 is a little over $200, with $218 being the highest hammer price and reasonable consistency between auctions.

Nope all were HA or similar not ebay. All looked reasonable for grade and none were identified as rare WB#s

Maybe the submitter never paid for the variety attribution but the bidders spotted it.

There's nothing rare for that year, no worse than R4 even in MS. I cannot imagine a reason why someone would pay as much as $250 for one, even in PCGS XF45.

I don't think it's about the price guide. At least when it comes to Auctions.

Auctions are well known to be a gamble. You could have a solid for the grade coin and only ONE bidder. So; it goes below book. You can have an auction where two or three inexperienced bidders go nuts on a coin they "just have to have". It could be that it is the only coin of there of that denomination, mm, and grade; and you have bidders that showed up looking specifically for that coin.

I had a coin up on ebay for 10 days; $49.95 starting price; 45 page views; 7 watchers; and NO bidders. I re-listed it for a HIGHER price, and ended up selling it for $67. So you just don't know.

Lastly; I have a rare Comic that booked for $345. It is one of 11 known copies. eight to nine of the known copies belong in National Collections. I had standing offers of $1200 for that comic from three other collectors. So why was it listed so cheaply? Well; there was only ONE auction record. That record was when I bought MINE. It was listed as an "Unknown Superman Comic, without cover". ...now EVERYONE looks at all the Coverless Comics to find out which issue it/they are. The days of cherry picking on ebay I think re mostly over.

Just my Two Cents.
