I have a series 1946 Barter Units Certificate. It says Frankfurt on it, so I assume it was from WW2. Does anyone know anything about this? I have googled and searched, but haven't had much luck. Just curious to know more about it and it's worth. I have a couple more from my grandfather.

Will try and upload a picture.

I found a link to a Heritage auction in 2006 where a high grade note sold for $299 http://currency.ha.com/itm/military...6084.s#Photo

Their description of the lot

Quote:

An interesting piece of scrip which may have served as a precursor to the more well known Military Payment Certificates. It's marked as redeemable at "Headquarters Command Barter Store, Frankfurt on Main, Germany, and denoted as "Series 1946." It's printed in green, brown and blue on buff colored paper, and the first we have offered.

I was able to find a seller on ebay who had two listings for this note. One raw and one certified prices were $250 and $300. The certified example had some useful info as it stated the Pick# as SB611 unlisted.

Pick# is a classification system found in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money edited by George Cuhaj.

Sorry this doesn't seem to provide much info.

There were two barter stores run by the Allied Military Government in Germany after WWII -- one in Frankfurt and the other Berlin.

The stores were created to help curb the blackmarket. Germans could bring their personal items (Zeiss cameras, shoes, whatever) where they were appraised on a point system. US military personnel could also bring items in for the same purpose. They were then given this amount in coupons which could be used to buy anything in the store. The store took a cut for operations. The unit denominated certificates were not redeemable for cash.

The Berlin store was not open long. The Frankfurt store was open long enough for there to be a number of different series of the coupons. When the Frankfurt store was closed in 1948, the remaining inventory was sold off and the money it had left over was donated to a German youth organization.

The notes are relatively scarce with the higher denominations (they were issued up to 100 units) being rare.

The number SB611 referenced in the ebay listing is for the Schwan-Boling catalog World War Two Remembered which is the bible for WWII numismatics. All of the barter store unit coupons are listed in that catalog.
