Ok so from what I understand ..anything BEFORE 1999 should be magnetic ..and anything after shouldnt be?

I am using a very strong earth magnet and have a year 2000 nickel that isn't magnetic?
or is this common?

The magnetic 2000 is the rare one. If it's magnetic, it should have a P under the queen's bust (means it;s made from multi-ply-plated steel which is magnetic). If it has no P, it's made of cupro-nickel and it is the common one.

I think the term is rarer, there are still a lot of the 2000p nickels. also note that there is a 2005 or 2006 no p which is also Cupro-nickel
