Hello,
Has anyone come across a fake £5 London Olympic coin. This at first glance look genuine so I bid on it on ebay and won it. But it turns out to be fake. It weights only 26.25g when it should be 28.28g. I have 2 of the genuine ones and I can easily see this one is a fake. The vendor says it is genuine and he bought it from a reputable ebay seller. I am opening a case with ebay.

I find it stunning that someone would go through the trouble of faking modern comems. Does not seem to be a lot of profit in it to me. Or is there a large premium on these that would warrent the work involved?

I think when they were issued, they were selling around $60 to $70. I would say that's a big premium. And they are very good fakes. I spot it easily because of the frosting on the obverse...actually no frosting. Anyway, ebay is going to refund me. I just have to send it back at my expense.Bummer

Very Curious.... is it possibly possible that it could be a genuine fault from the mint....! possibly a light blank that slipped through?

We are talking about 2 grams difference which is way too much...and the thickness is off too... 3.38mm when it should have been 2.89. I would think there would be some quality control on the coins at the mint to make sure the weight and dimensions are correct.

I am glad you are getting a refund. too thick and still too light.. Odd to put such good workmanship on such an obviously bad planchet. Good job spotting it.

Thanks everybody, I got a full refund yesterday. And guess what, the same fake coins are selling at just under $20 apiece at AliExpress...probably a lot less if you buy in bulk.
