In "Ancient Coin Collecting," Wayne Sayles provides a great outline of the origins of the hobby. Included in his description is information about how, by the end of the 18th century, collecting really began to take off. By the 19th century there was "an expansion of the common man's participation in ancient coin collecting. Doctors, lawyers, clergy, politicians, military officers, diplomats and bureaucrats - all possessed the means to purchase ancient coins and build modest collections." He goes on to describe how the period saw the birth of numismatic societies and professional numismatic firms.
I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility that yours is a legit ancient coin that made its way to America in the 18th or 19th century and was lost in the area you found it.
