At first when seeing the back of this 2001 dime I thought it was purposely damaged after circulation. But upon closer inspection I noticed extra partial lettering on the coin's front between the bottom rim and the raised print. The coin is filled with scratches and the copper colour spots on the back appear to be imbedded metal pieces. Two pictures attached.

I would greatly value your explanations and opinions as to what the errors are and what caused them.

Thank you.

I do know that what looks like extra lettering is if I remember correctly a die break. Very common for this year. I find it is more common than without. As for the rest I am no pro but my guess is PMD. I just found one with strong die break and a dot in front of the 2. Also I notice the one usually has a tail at the bottom.

Thank you Bob. With your comment I did some research about coin processing and your explanation makes total sense.

This is listed here under die grooves: http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...ts-1965-2014
2001 is a year of mistakes like these for dimes and quarters.

The red may be copper showing under damaged plating or rust.

No problem. I'm reluctant to weigh in as I am new but this one I was sure of.
