Hi I am new to coin collecting and this forum, as I have recently been given my grandfather's coin collection. He looked for dots and errors on coins.
I showed some coins (not this particular quarter) to a coin dealer and he mentioned that only known dots and errors are important.
I am wondering about the apparent double strike on the reverse of this 1959 quarter, especially visible in the word Regina, as the known double strike affects only the date, which is not affected on this coin. The word Canada on the obverse is also odd, with dots on the ends of the N.
I'm also wondering about the dot between the ribbons in the Queen's hair, as it is not a known dot.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks GRcoins
-GRcoins First let me mention that the queen is the obverse. I see what looks like Machine Doubling in "regina" but I'm having a hard time seeing the dots. Close up pics of the area would help.
Hi Thanks - I actually looked up obverse/reverse and then got it backwards!
Here are some closeups of the N - I'm also new to photographing coins! The dots are not separate from the N, but raised areas on the ends of each stroke of the N, higher on the free ends than on the angle ends.
I've also noticed some apparent doubling behind the Queen and on the caribou - see the antlers.
I believe there is a trace of Machine Doubling bottom of antler and under chin but the "N" looks like PMD to me. The dot is from a tiny die chip or ding in the die. Good eye.
