261614370496Polished like crazy or fake? The date looks too close to the date for that mintmark. Sorry typo. I typed 9 instead of 8. Edited by Altaira 10/08/2014 8:54 pm

Well, if it was a "1964s" seated half it would definitely be fake!

Ha! I looked back and saw the 1864 and for a second there thought I was loosing it!
I do agree with you that something looks off with that coin....old fake maybe?

Not sure if it's a new fake or old fake or not fake... The only thing I know is that it looks funny.

I found that date location in my research. Whether or not it's real, it is definitely a harshly cleaned coin. The crud stubbornly clinging to the stars is proof. It's a shame - this year/mint is a real sleeper in the series, and begins getting very tough indeed in this grade.

Looks genuine to me but as SD said, it's got all kinds of problems.

She needs to be in a pocket for a year or so to wear that polishing off. But she IS shiny pretty!

I didn't want to call fake because all of the other details are right, but way too shiny so that I got suspicious. You guys confirmed that it was polished too much. This is the first time I've seen something this polished until it looks pretty goofy.
It's a pity for this coin. is this one of the key dates?

I'd say real and it was a decent XF45 to 50 coin with a couple of small scrapes on the reverse before it was polished. Now I would probably net the coin as a VG 10 to F 12.

So cleaning lowers the grade of a coin instead of just giving it a details grade? So a cleaned XF coin wouldn't be just XF details?
Waste of a good coin, I've read a blog where the guy wrote that he cleans his coins by putting them in a cloth pocket and put it in the washing machine and they cone out all shiny.

You're conflating Details grading with Net grading, two completely different things. Details grades estimate the true level of detail on the coin, while Net grading estimates value. Conder's saying the coin should be worth an F-12 price.

Thanks for the explanation SD. How exactly is a Net grade determined?

Quote: How exactly is a Net grade determined? Experience, and knowing the market for the coin. It's even more subjective than the grading itself.

I vote for real, but cleaned harshly.
