I finished my first box of nickels this morning and jotted down the results. I took someone's advice and held on to any "s" mm and anything before 1960. Here is what I got - Everything is "P" unless marked otherwise:

'39 3
'40 4
'41 1
'46 1
'48 1
'51 1
'53 1
'53 D - 1
'54 1
'55 1
'55 D - 2
'58 D - 2 (1 is XF)
'59 P - 1 (XF)
'57 D - 4 (one is XF)
'59 D - 1
'61 D - 1
'68 D - 1

'68 S - 2
'69 S - 3
'70 S - 6

Seems like a high turn out for the "S" marks.

What's worth keeping, really?

Also, when I return these to the band (a different branch) is it okay to return the rolls in the clear wrapping they came in? ( I don't break the plastic, I just squeeze them out so I can reuse the wrap).

Thoughts, concerns, advice, etc.

Good box. Most banks frown on reused wrappers in my neck of the woods.

Very nice for a first box! The '55 is especially good--that's one of the tougher coins to find in the series.

I would keep all of the coins except maybe the duplicates of 57-D and 58-D. You will find plenty of those in your future boxes. I personally don't consider the '68-70-S nickels to be worth keeping unless BU, but others on here feel differently. For now, keep at least one of everything you find.

Also, I have never has much luck with getting the coins back into those plastic rolls, but more power to you if you can.

Wow, up here in Canada I've gone through many boxes just to match your finds on this one box! Sometimes we get solid rolls of American nickels but it's not super common. Great finds! and welcome to CCF and the wonderful hobby of coin roll hunting!

Yes, the 1955 is a good find, low mintage Jefferson. The S mint nickels are pretty common even here on the East Coast, but I hang onto them myself. The 1968S presents a DDO and a DDR opportunity, so if you do toss it back, have a look first (there are DDOs or DDRs for '69, '70, and '71 S mints; '68D DDO; '61D RPM).

the anything before 1960 advice is said because its simply easy to remember for people and just kinda lazy. if you really want to do keep the more scarce nickels, nix the 58-63 D's and keep the P's. 58, 59, 60, 61, 62P
