I was browsing the coins of this seller because he usually has some interesting pieces for sale, and I came across this gold dollar that looks incredibly fake to me even though I've never owned one. The "DOLLAR" and the date look incredibly mushy for a coin, and my instinct told me to look for pictures of it online and it does not match pictures of genuine pieces. The auction is over now but am I correctly identifying this as a fake? It would be interesting because this seller "guarantees" that his coins are authentic.

Here is a link to the auction:

Yes, this coin looks weird. However, I believe this is just a die state and that the coin is infact genuine.

Value wise, it doesn't matter very much with this coin, because it is holed.
There are lots of fakes and jewelry copies about with gold dollars, especially of the 1849 date, due to the historic importance of this date in the gold history of California.

This one may be fake, but I would not be worried too much in this case, because it is holed.

Probably best used recycled back into jewelry. It should find a better home there.

I can think of things that might cause a wear pattern like that, especially if this coin was worn on a string around the neck (what else could fit through a hole that tiny?) of a soldier in the Civil War. A good luck charm from a grandparent, perhaps.

I believe it's real. The ex jewelry pieces that I have seen all seem to have the same kind of mushy details like this coin. What SsuperDdave said, it entirely possible.

Hmm, interesting replies and I like the points you guys made. As I said I've never owned a gold coin so I've never thought about the wear issue. Seen as how gold is such a soft metal, I can certainly see how wear could make the details mushy. Now if you have mushy details on a nickel coin then you'd have a problem...

I think the bidding reflected a little bit of my thinking, hammering at $140.
