1983 nickels are actually cupronickel, so they are not magnetic. I think the colour is because of environmental damage.

Your coin looks like a coin found in the ground using a metal detector.

Yes I agree with environmental damage and wear, would anybody guess that it is copper we are seeing? it is supposed to be non-magnetic because of the nickel plating and copper. CuproNickel.

You won't be able to find the article unless you are a member.(highly recommended)

There is no nickel plating on these, cupronickel is an alloy.

The only way to determine if the coin is copper-rich is by XRF analysis.

Im pretty sure this is a alloy mixing error.I had one exactly the same and I think it was same year.. There was more copper than normal this is why the copper color.. SPP has the details on this type.. If I am correct you will find them in several other years also

There is NO plating on the 1983 5 cent coin. This coin is a mixing error from the mint. I have numerous MINT STATE examples. It is not environmental damage. Please look up cupro-nickel and understand the term.

Oh come on Mike... are you sure this is not a "snowbank" coin?

I've sent a few of these nickels back into the wild assuming they where PMD..thinking campfire coin, school experiment or environmental. So for me this is a good lesson..thanks to nickelsguy

aaargh......................LOL TY Roger. Fishing either 1-2 or 8-9 Nov.
For years on another coin site I argued about these 5 cent coins. I was told snow bank coin, ground find etc etc etc then proved it as aq mixing error when SPP zapped a bunch of mine and others like Sid. I now own that one as well.
