It is obverse 2. The previous three I have seen, but failed to obtain, were also OBV2 without doubt.Despite the auctioneers poor pics I was sure it was OBV2 and bid anyways,I wanted one of these mythical coins. If 4 of nine are misattributed what are the chances that any of the other 5 are indeed OBV1. http://www.icollector.com/Lot-of-Tw...ts_i20498704

Good morning, up early today.. going to a Coin show of sorts. DBM, why would you call this coin mythical? is there a interesting story to it? I believe if one searches long enough, one day you will find one. I have to check my old stash as I believe there is a H hidden in it. A winter-storm project.

Here's part of the story. I won't mention names because some of it it hearsay as I wasn't there to hear to hear the conversation between the dealer and grader. Quite a few years ago a well known dealer listed on ebay a certified 1871 25ΒΆ OBV1. I noticed the coin was actually an OBV2. I had his ear back then and e-mailed him about my concerns. After some back and forth about the markers such as the I in Gratia, the jewel in front of the crown &c. he agreed the coin was OBV2. He removed the coin from ebay saying he did not want to sell a misattributed coin, and that he was going to the upcoming Torex and would present the coin to the grader for an explanation. A few months later at a coin show the dealer had the same coin in the same holder for sale. I asked him "What's up with that?" he replied, without looking me in the eye, that the only marker that matters is the ribbon end and thus the coin is OBV1, then he curtly turned away to talk to the dealer at the next table. I knew then and there that quite a few misattributed OBV1 coins existed and had an insight to the exclusive Mutual Admiration Societies which dictate Canadian coin collecting.

"the exclusive Mutual Admiration Societies which dictate Canadian coin collecting. DBM, No idea what you actually mean? are you referring to a TPG who would not admit a mistake?

I suspect he means, "The Old Boys Club" of dealers and such... who are more interested in looking after their own interests, than the hobby itself...
I tend to agree with him...

SPP, you wrote my thoughts. Any more details on that, perhaps some hints?

Yes, here is a big hint...

About six weeks ago I was perusing my latest issue of CCN when I noticed the Trends editor had raised the price of the 1871h OBV1 for seemingly no other reason than the fact that it is rare.None had recently been sold and I believe only three in the last six years. I knew instantly that this could mean only one thing, there is one for sale.Sure enough there it was in the upcoming Bell Toronto Coin Expo Auction catalogue. Coincidence?

I wonder how many misattributed ones exist?

At least four of the nine known. Odds are the other five are misattributed as well.

The coin I posted here is the one from the Bell auction. All in with taxes, shipping etc. I paid about $210 for this coin. Hard to tell from the auction pics if it's OBV1 or 2, but I knew from my past experiences that it was OBV2 and bid anyway as I just had to have it. http://www.icollector.com/Lot-of-Tw...ts_i20498704

So whats next send it back to ICCS tell them they are wrong and ask them to repay you as it is their mistake that cost you that money..
