In a separate thread about my first crack-out coin I mentioned that I had discovered issues with some of the Peace dollars I bought when I first started collecting. This 1926-D is one of them. I clearly see surface hairlines, but do you guys/gals think this coin was also dipped at some point? I have read before that dark spots on a coin (above "OF" on reverse) can indicate this. I tend to think that it was, but I would like opinions. This one will be replaced regardless. I want to describe the coin accurately when I sell it. Thanks.

The coin looks great outside of the dark spot that you mentioned. Although I am not an expert on picking out a dipped coin from a group, I wouldn't mind having the coin in my collection.

Sometimes I can spot a dipped coin right away but for an 80 year old coin it looks great and I feel that if it was dipped it was done quite awhile ago.

Never heard of the dark spot on the "of" as being a give away tell for a dipped coin.
Rest in Peace

I think the dark spot was caused by a leak in whatever the coin was housed in. I've seen cardboard 2x2's that had a small pin-hole in the mylar window with the exact same effect. Dipped? maybe. Hard to believe any 80+ year old coin would be blast white especially a lightly circulated one. It does not appear to be over-dipped to me, however.
