I found this coin this morning and it's the thinnest denarius yet .
It's solid silver with some black tarnish I haven't cleaned yet , no bronze to assume fouree .
It's 1mm thick 1.5 including bust and weight 1.7 grams , was this common practice for the mints to produce them with such little silver ?

Looks like it might be a Limes Denarius.

Thanks echizento , after looking I'm still unsure of what a limes denarius is ? Is it a coin in lieu of payment to be redeemed or a base metal with silver plate ? I doubt it's the latter as its too thin to have any different metal core . It's as thin as a medieval hammered coin .

Simple put Limes denarius where coins struck on the fringes of the empire and used to pay the troops. They usually contained less silver and weight less the the official issues.

I err on the side of caution, so perhaps when I confess that if I saw this coin for sale on ebay I would suspect it's authenticity and pass, it isn't entirely surprising. Nonetheless that you found it yourself just goes to show that in so doing I pass on a lot of perfectly OK coins..
