Hello,
I saw a George Washington presidential medal at a coin shop recently and was curious about it. I checked PCGS and found a couple of sets of presidential medals registered. Looking at the sets, some of the medals are listed as "no date" while others have a year 2007+.

I am curious about what this set is, and when it was minted (since some have "no date"). I checked ebay and found almost nothing. I found a white house medal along with a jimmy carter medal. Maybe I was searching for the wrong things, but these seem pretty hard to come by.

Any other information would be appreciated as my curiosity will bug me for a while!

Franklin mint and any private mint can put a set out for any reason. And there have been a lot of them over the years.images of them https://www.google.com/search?q=Pre...1024&bih=641
and more images https://www.google.com/search?q=Pre...1024&bih=641

You might get lucky and find it. Google using the presidents name and the word image.
Most are made and sold as collectables that end up as not really collectables other than the silver and gold content one.

There have been ones as give a ways from gas stations. You get the idea, with out a photo or name of the producer it will be hard to pin it down.

Would any of these be able to be graded by PCGS and then qualify for their set registries? I thought only U.S. mint products could count.

I would image that the grading services will grade anything if you are willing to pay for it! Since they all ready grade magazines and other collectables. And there are enough CWT's that show up graded and mounted.
The problem would become could you find anybody that would want to pay the money for the set?

The other question that occurs would be since they aren't a well known set no provenance and not anything thing outstanding "why"!

The presidential medal sets listed on the PCGS site are comprised of medals struck by the US Mint as part of its "Presidents of the United States" series. PCGS is not currently encapsulating similar medals from the Franklin Mint or other private mints.

The medals have been struck in bronze in the small (1-5/16") size since 1972 - the "miniature" series was initiated to help draw young collectors into the field of coin and medal collecting. In the beginning, the medals cost $0.50 each, their current price is $6.95.

The entire run of medals is not currently available from the Mint, but they are from time to time. The Mint usually keeps a few medals in stock - most recent presidents + the perennially popular George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy.

If you are interested, you should be able to assemble a complete set of the medals via ebay. One note, recent issues have all been struck at Philadelphia, but earlier issues were struck at Philadelphia and Denver (the Denver pieces have a "D" mint mark).

Hope that helps!
