For those of you that collect sets and coins from the mint ie. Uncirculated sets or gift sets like the O Canada or Baby sets how do you display them?
Ive heard of people cutting open the packages and displaying the coins individually but keeping them in the capsules or plastic but is this the common practice?
thanks for your feedback

Here is a link to an old thread about re-purposing old RCM set display boxes for any set of coins you like.

Thanks for the feedback!
Lets take this one step further. I've also seen people cut coins out of sets and display them in cardboard 2x2 and display them or store them in pages. Does anyone have thoughts on that as well?
Thanks again

I think this comes down to your personal preference regarding the packaging (and storage space for your coins). There really isn't a "right" or "wrong" answer.

If you are focused on the coins themselves and don't care about the packaging (or need to reduce the amount of space your coin collection takes up), then remove the coins and place them in either 2x2's or albums.

If you enjoy the original packages / want to keep the sets together (and don't want to devote too much room to coin storage), then just leave them be.

One other thing to consider, future resale value of the sets might be higher if the coins are kept in their original (and undamaged) packaging.

Hope that helps!

While dealers may have a need to cut up or sell certain coins individually from Mint sets, collectors usually want the entire sets intact in the original packaging. Quite often you see the proof or silver dollars missing from sets.

Unless you're unhappy with the presentation, looking to get more for the coins individually or want to have them graded and certified, I see no point in removing them. Coins in 2x2 holders are far too easy to pop out and spend, though they do look nice in a binder!

From time to time you may also find cases, boxes, clamshells or holders for sale that once housed these coins at nominal prices. Ie: 1908-1998 or 1953-2003 commemorative sets which can be repurposed.

On a related note, I find the shipping boxes very handy for storing most of the NCLT stuff from the Mint. Not only can you mark them, they stack nicely on a shelf as well!

One added benefit of ordering from the Mint website is using the excess boxes/envelopes to organize consignments for upcoming club auctions. Just add your contact #, mark down how many items and hand them in.
