Hi All! I am just trying to see if my own impression of what this quarter would be graded as is accurate. Appreciate the help and feedback. Just a note on its history. I found this while metal detecting. Placed it on the counter and went to get my coin guide. Came back and my friend was rinsing it under water in the sink. I almost killed him. I have not done any other cleaning with or without chemicals. Edited by Solinus 10/20/2014 08:15 am

So EF must mean extra fine? I had said in the post that it was cleaned by my friend in the sink, but no other cleaning. Does that lower the value? Does it lower it a lot? I may have to sell some coins for my wife and I to get through some situations, but if the value is ruined because of the rinsing under water than I guess it will go back in the box.

water rinse was not the problem. Coin looks like it has hairline scratches on its surfaces and crud in the devices around date. Numismedia price in xf no problems shape is 200. Real world price for a coin like yours would be 50 to 75 IMHO

Well, I am not surprised about the scratches. I found this buried about 11 inches down. It was outside what would have been the entrance door to the original post office in the town I lived at the time. And when my friend ran it under water he was using his thumb to rub it clean. Still worth trying to sell then at 50 to 75. It will be a help to us. Thanks for the information and taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

XF-40 (extremely-fine) details, harshly cleaned. Value takes a significant hit.

VF details, harshly cleaned. Looks like someone took steel wool to it. Cleaning dropped its value significantly.

Everyone talks about how harshly it was cleaned, it wasn't. It was run underwater by a friend and rubbed with his thumb. It was, however, buried under the ground for almost 100 years. That can do some damage to a coin, especially in sandy ground. :) But I appreciate the replies.

Perhaps the sandy soil was ground into it with his thumb. OUCH!

What everyone is saying is that the coin was harshly cleaned BEFORE it went into the ground. Rinsing the coin with water was not a problem and would not really classify as cleaning a coin.
