1940-S Mercury Dime With Weird Toning

I got this one out of a very old album a awhile back and I always wondered about the toning.

the coin has luster pictures do do it justice but it is golden brown with rainbow reflections.

btw its not plated


color on is 100% of coin

it looks dark brown from distance
and up close it looks golden.

has luster like unc coin pictures dont show too well

It does look odd. Correct weight? Any wrong metal errors known for that date?

I looked around and found this different date but same toning effect...

I found one in slab with same color they call it toned

The coin on the link looks more golden and yours looks coppery. It kinda reminds me of a metal detector find?

.. I assume you mean heated by a lighter.. that's is a possibility would of been a long time ago ...

I've seen this type of toning before, and in TPG holders, so it's just a feature of that particular coin.
