Hi All

Just having a look at the first coins in my grandfather's collection. He has marked this coin as a No D 1922 cent, and looking at it straight on, there doesn't seem to be any mint mark under the date. However, when I angle the coin, there is a bit of a rise where the mint mark should be and I can see a D at times, so I'm thinking it's a weak D cent. What do you think?

Thanks for your help!

I'd say you are right on target. If you go to lincolncentresource you can see the various dies they were struck with. Yours is either die 1,3, or 4.

Thanks edweather!

I've had a look at the site you mentioned. I think not die 4, as there is separation between the coat and rim.

The second 2 in the date is definitely weaker than the first, so either die 1 or 3.

The reverse appears to be very weak, so 1 or 3.

No lines in the wheat, suggesting 1, but no die crack (suggesting not 1).

The O hasn't noticeably spread, so perhaps not 3, but the L in LIBERTY does appear to butt against the rim (suggesting 3).

Overall, I think die 1.

The general wear on the coin makes it hard for me to distinguish wear from weakness and I wonder at what point the coin is too worn to be of any value!

I do notice that the TY in LIBERTY seem to be a bit lower than the rest of the word and wonder if that is normal.

Thanks for your help!

I think you actually do have a weak D cent there....as long as there are no signs of tampering (i.e. someone trying to make a no D)....but it doesn't look that way to me.

The coin is actually not that worn, I would grade it around VG8-10.

Looks like a weak D from these pics. How does the mintmark area look from under a loupe or microscope?

Thanks for your help guys!

I don't have a microscope, but with a loupe I can see a slight rise in the mint mark area which shows a D on certain angles, as in the photo. There aren't any scrapes in that area, other than the scratch which starts in the coat.
