my thinking, going by the weight is that this is a silver cotale from Florence in the early 1500's - item is 7.4g and 28(ish)mm but I cant find a ref with pictures - nice item tho *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** to the Ancient and prior to 1600 coin section

Thank you for that Medieval, it has given me quite a lot to think about, certainly dont think it will be on ebay with a 99p start with no reserve.

This is a very beautiful coin, LaverdaJohn. Totally out of my area of attention so far, but it tempts me to investigate this era and region of coinage. Congratulations!

It looked a little spurious but I could not find a report on forgeries of it. Quote: This is a very beautiful coin, Many (late) medieval coins have interesting/beautiful designs especially the gold and larger silver pieces. Would like to get some more but most are more expensive than ancient coins.

I was looking for any mention of forgeries myself, to be honest I'm not sure what to do with it, I have a few contacts and I will get it looked at.

Have sent an email to the British Museum identification department with these pic's - amazing what you can do online these days, also asked if they had any reports of forgeries of this.

Sat on the steps of the BM, they have identified this as silver 1\5 scudo Florence 1503 1533 is this the same as the cotale, hard to search stuff on a small screen

In that period the Scudo was a gold coin, so it would depend on the then relevant comparative value of silver to gold. The Italian catalogue I linked above considers it as a Cotale, if the staff of the British Museum prefer to use a different name for the denomination, then perhaps they can explain it.

Happy that has been solved for you 'laverdajohn'. As for 'Valecrucis', have a close look at number 431 in that link There is an example which is not in the Crusader Coin listings

Yes Medeival, sigh. The area for me to explore, in my search for an ID, expands evermore. Enough for an utter novice like myself to get lost in permanently.

Love the obverse on that one. Where'd you get it from?
