Unless is it is very obvious, I am afraid I steer clear of comments regarding inauthenticity, but for what it's worth: at first glance this looks OK stylistically, but I would be very suspicious of filed edges and even though the surfaces look cleaned there are a couple of issues I would want given the all clear such as a little pitting around the rims and even the possibility of casting pearls behind and also above the bust. Difficult to say more in the presence of surfaces and rims that have been altered a little anyway. I am not saying these issues are 'unnatural' just that I would definitely want someone who knows far more than I to look at the coin before I spent that kind of money.

I am with Valecrucis. Is it coming from a respected dealer with guarantees? If you do go ahead with it, I think I would want it authenticated by someone like David Sear.
How is the display cabinet coming along?

There is no reason to keep questioning the authenticity of coins sold by CNG

Actually, when I located this coin on the WWW I didn't take notice that it was sold by CNG. Yes, I agree with Victor. CNG, it goes without saying, are highly reputable. Not that anyone is beyond a mistake, but even so.

Interesting... when I last checked the bidding (last night? this morning? it's all a blur... too many auctions lately) the bidding on this coin was ~$1800.
The auction is going on now or has finished. This lot was withdrawn.

Well.... Surprise! It was pulled as a fake by CNG, called them to confirm.

WOW! Well on this occasion I take back everything I said about not questioning the coins of CNG. The point does remain, though, that they are generally speaking very trustworthy and have great expertise. Anyway, it's kind of satisfying, as an amateur, when upon inspection of images, a coin raises personal worries of authenticity which turn out to be valid....especially when, for a time at least, the inauthenticity had been missed by a professional auction house.
CNG aside, it underlines an important general point...no one is infallible...no matter how much experience one has acquired. I always respect more those who on a personal level preserve humility and open themselves up to questioning as a matter of course....even from newbies. No matter how much experience one has its always a mistake to adopt an air of almost unchallengeable authority.
One thing I have appreciated in the past about CNG is that they are as an organisation open in this way.
I would love to know what it was specifically about this coin which identified it as a forgery.
Thanks for posting this as a topic Caesar77...and the slightly covert manner with which you revealed the facts. Very interesting!

30 minutes before auction was set to close, and item had been bid up to 1800 it was suddenly withdrawn! I called, mad, and found out it was deemed a forgery and the coin was pulled by CNG!!

Goes to shown how good forgers have become to even fool those at the CNG up to the last minute of the sale. I'd be curious to know how they finally figured it out.
