Hi All

A 1847 large cent from my grandfather's collection. It has a few bangs in the date and it's not 100% flat - though only slightly bent. I'm wondering about it's value as a result of these problems!

Thanks for your help!

I would think it has great sentimental value because it belonged to your grandfather and that's why I would keep it. It has almost no value (perhaps $5) on the market because of the damage and very heavy wear.

Grcoins - I just had a another thought about this coin. Your grandfather was a collector and knew that it had little or no market value, but he kept it. Often a collector having a heavily worn and damaged coin will keep it as a pocket piece. Is it possible that your grandfather carried a pocket piece with him? This coin may have been personally valuable to him also. As I said earlier - it's definitely a keeper.

your grandfather kept it because perhaps his grandfather gave it to him when he was little.

GR,

You might even be able to grab $ 7 - $ 8 for that coin if an auction didn't have any other large cents going on the block that day.

It's pretty much just a hole filler in its current state.

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions! Knowing that the coin's not worth much frees me up to enjoy it for itself and ponder its origins!

My great great great grandparents moved from Ontario in the 1860s intending to make their fortune in the Pennsylvania oil boom, but returned to Canada a few years later, apparently with nothing, except perhaps this large cent!
